Going to Blackpool
A place of happy memories. A familiar place to feel like your old self,
The spacing between them both indicates the distance that they can feel at times when struggling with the changes that my grandad is going through with his dementia.
See you on the driveway
This diptych of the front door of my grandparents house and their next door neighbour represents their meeting point after finishing strictly, as they leave the safety of home to the legion, allowing them to reconnect with friends.
The Legion
The club that has always been the centre of socialising with friends.
The title, place and image reflect the family and community that helps to maintain my Grandads memory.
it doesn’t matter that it has not been maintained it shows that members to go to feel a real sense of unity and togetherness.
My own experience with the location enabled to capture expressions that were more genuine compared to a shoot where the focus is on staging each person.
The stage
The unpretentious decorations at the club are indicative of the down to earthness and informality that helps Grandad deal with the anxiety he often feels at this stage of his condition.
The movement of money
This image is used to show the person behind the dementia, doing something he has always loved to do. I feel adding an image that shows the movements of his hands allows people to feel like there is a closer connection between him and his story, allowing people to realise he deserves more than the label of a disease.
Sunday night bingo
An activity my grandparents have done every week since they first met at 16. it is in my grandad's routine and is no longer just a memory but instead it is conditioned into him and if it were to be taken out would only lead to a deeper sense of confusion.
